About the Opportunity

The City of St. John's is seeking a skilled Lifeguard Instructor to join our team at the Paul Reynolds Community Centre and the Mews Community Centre. As a Lifeguard Instructor, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of our patrons and providing high-quality instruction in aquatic programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to aquatic and program regulations
  • Instruct skills and strokes in accordance with Red Cross programs and Recreation Division standards
  • Maintain direct contact with patrons and communicate effectively
  • Monitor pool areas and check change rooms, shower areas, and steam/sauna areas during aquatic activities
  • Ensure a safe aquatic environment at all times
  • Secure the pool area when not supervised
  • Maintain pool deck cleanliness and lifeguard room organization
  • Complete and submit necessary forms and reports
  • Report incidents, difficulties, or complaints to the Head Lifeguard
  • Maintain current aquatic qualifications
  • Participate in in-service training and staff meetings

Requirements

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C
  • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard award
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor Certificate
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, coworkers, and supervisors

Working Conditions

  • Aquatic conditions may be hot and humid
  • Considerable time spent in the water swimming, teaching, training, or performing rescues
  • Frequent interaction with the public and staff
  • Flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends

Physical Requirements

  • Walking, standing, lifeguarding, instructing, and maintaining focus for extended periods
  • Moderate physical effort during teaching, training, or certification programs
  • Lifting and handling equipment, such as teaching platforms and lane ropes
  • Lifting and aiding swimming lesson participants

Hours of Work

Hours will be on a call-in basis or scheduled based on program requirements.

Applicants must be members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 1289, or be prepared to join the Union immediately upon appointment.
