About the Opportunity

The City of St. John's is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lifeguard Instructor to join our team at the Paul Reynolds Community Centre and the Mews Community Centre. As an Aquatic Program Specialist, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our patrons while delivering high-quality aquatic programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all aquatic and program regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Deliver instructional programs, including swimming lessons, water safety, and first aid training, in accordance with Red Cross and Lifesaving Society standards.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, communicating effectively with patrons, staff, and supervisors.
  • Monitor pool areas, change rooms, and other facilities to maintain a safe and clean environment.
  • Ensure the security of pool areas, including locking public access when not supervised.
  • Perform administrative tasks, such as submitting reports, maintaining records, and completing necessary forms.
  • Participate in in-service training, staff meetings, and other professional development opportunities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 16 years of age, as required by Public Pool Regulations.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification.
  • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard award.
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor Certificate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups, including patrons, staff, and supervisors.

Working Conditions

  • Aquatic environments may be hot and humid.
  • Considerable time may be spent in the water, swimming, teaching, or performing rescues.
  • Frequent interaction with the public and staff.
  • Flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Physical Requirements

  • Walking, standing, and lifeguarding for extended periods.
  • Moderate physical effort when teaching swimming lessons or participating in training programs.
  • Lifting and handling equipment, such as teaching platforms and lane ropes.
  • Lifting and aiding swimming lesson participants, as per Lifesaving Society standards.

Hours of Work

Hours will be on a call-in basis or scheduled based on program requirements.
