Head of Department of Surgery

The University of British Columbia is seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual to fill the position of Head of the Department of Surgery. This is a key leadership role that requires a strong academic and administrative background, as well as a proven track record of success in leading teams and driving innovation.
Key Responsibilities- Provide strategic leadership to the Department of Surgery, aligning with the University's mission and vision.
- Develop and implement departmental goals and objectives, ensuring alignment with the Faculty of Medicine's strategic plan.
- Lead and manage a team of faculty members, staff, and students, fostering a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and respect.
- Collaborate with Health Authority leadership to create academic integration of teaching and research into clinical service delivery and Health Human Resource Planning.
- Develop and maintain high-quality relationships with stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
- Ensure the Department of Surgery is a leader in education, research, and service, contributing to the health of individuals and communities locally, nationally, and internationally.
- PhD or equivalent in a relevant field.
- Proven track record of academic and administrative leadership, with a strong focus on innovation and collaboration.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and implement effective solutions.
- Experience in team building, fostering engagement, and promoting inclusivity across working and learning environments.
- Ability to communicate and interact with empathy, understanding, and respect of diverse perspectives and behaviors.
- Experience in a similar leadership role, preferably in a university or academic setting.
- Strong research and innovation background, with a focus on surgery or a related field.
- Experience in working with Health Authorities and other external partners to drive academic integration and innovation.
