Job Description

The University of British Columbia is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of Head of the Department of Surgery. This is a key leadership role that requires a strong academic and administrative background, as well as a proven track record of success in supporting the career development and mentorship of faculty members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Department of Surgery, aligning with the Faculty of Medicine's goals and objectives.
  • Foster a culture of excellence, mutual respect, and inclusivity within the department, promoting diversity and equity in all aspects of academic and professional life.
  • Develop and implement effective plans to advance the department's research, education, and clinical programs, ensuring alignment with the University's strategic priorities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and external partners, to promote collaboration and innovation.
  • Oversee the department's budget and resources, ensuring effective allocation and management to support its goals and objectives.
  • Make key decisions regarding faculty appointments, promotions, and tenure, in consultation with the Dean and other relevant stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant field, with a strong academic and research background.
  • Proven track record of success in academic and administrative leadership roles, with a focus on faculty development and mentorship.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills, with the ability to develop and implement effective plans to achieve departmental goals.
  • Experience in budget management and resource allocation, with a focus on ensuring effective use of departmental resources.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to promote a culture of excellence and inclusivity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a similar leadership role, preferably in a university or academic setting.
  • Strong knowledge of the academic and research landscape, with a focus on surgery and related fields.
  • Experience in building and maintaining partnerships with external organizations, including hospitals, research institutions, and industry partners.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts to diverse audiences, including faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.
