The Role
We are seeking a Labour Relations Specialist to provide expertise and advice to all levels of management and act as the liaison between Human Resources and the rest of the organization. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of labour relations, collective agreements, and employment legislation, and will be able to provide timely and accurate counsel to managers and supervisors.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise and assist managers, supervisors, and employees on the interpretation and application of collective agreements, employment legislation, and employee conduct rules.
- Meet regularly with union officers, department managers, and HR Business Partners to ensure administrative requirements are fulfilled and to address deficiencies.
- Provide proactive assistance to identify and resolve employee concerns to pre-empt grievances.
- Conduct investigations, summarize findings, and recommend solutions related to formal complaints.
- Lead processes and provide coaching on performance management, attendance management, conflict resolution, problem-solving, and discipline.
- Partner with client groups on HR processes such as workplace redesign, organizational structure, lines of sequence, scheduling, and health and safety.
- Prepare for and attend arbitration cases.
- Assist in contract negotiations and develop bargaining proposals.
- Ensure compliance with relevant provisions of the Labour Relations Act, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Human Rights Code.
Requirements
- University degree or college diploma in Business or a related field, with specialization or additional coursework in Human Resources.
- Labour Relations experience in a unionized environment, including collective agreement administration, conflict resolution, grievance management, and arbitration preparation.
- Heavy manufacturing industry experience is an asset.
- Excellent working knowledge of the Labour Relations Act, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Human Rights Code.
- Experience in educating and supporting key organizational stakeholders on collective agreements.
- Enthusiastic about leading, facilitating, and participating in process improvements.
- Good personal computer skills, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and HRIS. Experience with SAP is an asset.
- Excellent analytical and creative problem-solving skills.
- Experience facilitating solutions with employees at all levels.
