Job Summary

The Home Helper provides essential homemaking services to individuals and families in their homes or at the time of discharge from hospital, adhering to VON policies, procedures, and quality & risk management frameworks. This role involves collaborating with healthcare professionals to meet clients' needs and promote optimal independence and well-being.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform light housekeeping duties, including dusting, cleaning, vacuuming, and laundry, to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
  • Prepare meals and conduct environmental risk assessments to ensure clients' safety and comfort.
  • Provide companionship and conversation to alleviate loneliness and isolation.
  • Assist clients with walking and mobility, promoting independence and confidence.
  • Remind clients of medication and appointments, ensuring timely adherence to treatment plans.
  • Evaluate and assess clients' homes, personal situations, and care plans to identify areas for improvement.
  • Contribute to the development of care plans in collaboration with the Coordinator.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals to manage clients' physical, emotional, and homemaking needs.
Common Responsibilities
  • Promote VON's goals and values as an integrated community care provider.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy workplace, adhering to provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, and VON's Safety Management System.
  • Abide by all VON policies and work practices.
  • Protect clients' confidentiality and personal information, ensuring appropriate safeguards are in place.
  • Collaborate with other staff in a team approach to service delivery.
Education, Designations, and Experience
  • High school graduate.
  • 2-3 years' experience working with children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Post-secondary education preferred.
  • Household management or professional customer service experience preferred.
  • Experience working for a professional cleaning services organization preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse social and economic environments preferred.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Personal Support Worker or Health Care Aide certification an asset.
Skill Requirements
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Good assessment skills.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Ability to take direction and work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements emphasizing good body mechanics. Individuals in this role must walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
