Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Dalhousie University Full time

Dalhousie University is committed to upholding the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and addressing the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Our Strategic Plan, Si'st Kasqimtlnaqnipunqekl Teli L'wi'tmasimk/Third Century Promise, emphasizes our dedication to fostering profound and impactful partnerships with Indigenous Peoples throughout Canada, particularly with the Mi'kmaw Nation, on whose traditional lands our primary campuses are situated.

Reconciliation is a collective duty that necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the realities of colonialism in Canada, alongside a transformative shift in objectives, frameworks, policies, and practices. In alignment with the recommendations from Dalhousie's Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC) and the initiatives outlined in our Indigenous Strategy, we are seeking candidates for the pivotal role of Vice-Provost, Indigenous Relations (VPIR).

The VPIR will report directly to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, serving as a crucial collaborator with the Vice-Provost for Equity & Inclusion and the Vice-President for People & Culture, while also acting as a senior strategic advisor to the President and Vice-Chancellor, as well as the broader executive leadership team.

Dalhousie University is dedicated to providing the necessary support and resources to ensure the VPIR's success, including adequate budgetary and administrative backing as recommended in the Dalhousie University Indigenous Strategy.

The VPIR will engage closely with various stakeholders involved in Indigenous initiatives at Dalhousie, including the Director of Indigenous Community Engagement, senior leaders across faculties and units, and Indigenous committees, councils, and working groups on campus. The goal is to develop, implement, and promote high-visibility, impactful initiatives aimed at Indigenization, decolonization, and reconciliation. Through collaborative efforts, the VPIR will strive to advance essential and constructive changes while enhancing the access, experiences, and engagement of Indigenous faculty, staff, and students at Dalhousie. It is anticipated that the VPIR will further define the role based on the priorities of Indigenous Nations in Canada and the university itself, while also strengthening relationships with local and regional Indigenous communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Act as the institutional leader for Dalhousie's Indigenous Strategy, working collaboratively to enhance institutional capacity and expertise for its successful execution, while measuring and communicating progress.
  2. Collaborate with senior leaders to coordinate, evaluate, enhance, and report on various Indigenous initiatives, programs, and projects across Dalhousie, serving as a coordinating and amplifying presence for the numerous units and individuals involved in Indigenous initiatives.
  3. Work with university leaders in consultation with the Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, Peskotomuhkati, and other Indigenous communities to develop a strategy for Indigenous hiring and retention, and to support pathways into higher education, transition and orientation programming, student retention, and degree progression for Indigenous students.
  4. Provide provincial, national, and international leadership on behalf of Dalhousie regarding issues related to Indigeneity, engaging Indigenous populations in the region, including urban communities, in active collaboration with the Director of Indigenous Community Engagement.
  5. In partnership with the Vice-President for People & Culture and the Vice-Provost for Equity & Inclusion, advocate for Indigenous faculty, staff, and students, prioritizing actions that will reduce barriers and enhance engagement and experiences for these groups at the university.
  6. Play a consultative leadership role regarding research conducted by and with Indigenous Peoples.

Qualifications:

  • Must be an Indigenous individual, with preference given to candidates from the Mi'kmaw, Wolastoqiyik, or Peskotomuhkati Nations, acknowledging the territories where Dalhousie University operates.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience is essential.
  • A graduate degree or equivalent qualifications is required.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage in challenging discussions and foster consensus.
  • Understanding of policies, statutes, and reports relevant to Indigenous peoples and the post-secondary education sector, along with knowledge of initiatives, programs, and transformative practices that support Indigenous education, student success, and community engagement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant connection to the Mi'kmaw, Wolastoqey, and/or Peskotomuhkati Nations, with respectful relationships with Indigenous leaders in the region.
  • Leadership experience in an academic context, with a clear understanding of academic administration, processes, and procedures.
  • Experience in leadership roles within Indigenous community organizations.
  • A record of mentorship or training in Indigenous knowledge and skills at either the community or institutional level.
  • Proficiency in an Indigenous language.
  • Experience in post-secondary institutions in teaching, advising, or planning capacities.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous research methodologies and ethics, with the ability to provide guidance on policy or practice in this area.
  • Experience collaborating with organizational leadership, boards, and executive teams.
  • Experience in financial and human resources management.

As with all senior leaders at Dalhousie, the VPIR will be expected to embody the core and leadership competencies that define the Dalhousie Competencies. Of particular interest to the committee will be the following competencies:

  1. Strategic Thinking and Action
  2. Respect & Inclusion
  3. Effective Communication
  4. Relationship Development
  5. Innovation and Change
