Justice Advocate Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to join our team as a Justice Advocate. This role will play a vital part in reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system.

About Us:

The BC First Nations Justice Council is committed to supporting Nations in their journey towards sovereignty over justice. Our mission is to empower Indigenous communities through culturally safe and effective justice systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal representation for Indigenous clients involved in MCFD proceedings and criminal charges
  • Advocate on behalf of clients for diversion from the formal court system to less intrusive measures, including Indigenous intervention protocols and alternative dispute resolution processes
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities, service providers, and government agencies
  • Collaborate with clients, their communities, and support teams to develop alternate care plans that keep children safe and with their families where possible
  • Compile and submit statistical data as required

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Membership in a Canadian Law Society, preferably British Columbia
  • J.D. considered an asset
  • 1-5 years litigation experience in criminal defense, with exposure to MCFD matters an asset
  • Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures
  • Ability to provide a culturally safe environment for clients

What We Offer:

  • Extended benefits package including health and dental, personal days, paid vacation, and RRSP/TFSA savings plans
  • Competitive salary range: $90,000 - $150,000, commensurate with education and experience
  • Full-time position (35 hours/week) with a hybrid work arrangement available

Reporting and Location:

This role reports to the Provincial Director of the Indigenous Justice Centres and is based in Surrey, BC, with occasional travel to other locations.
