Sessional Instructor: Materials and Techniques

We are seeking a Sessional Instructor to teach Materials & Methods: Beadwork in the Fall/Winter 2024-25 terms.
Course Description: This class will delve into the history of beads specific to the Haudenosaunee (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora) with an emphasis on cultural and social changes from the 15th century to today. Wampum is significantly used by the First Nations of the Eastern Woodlands for ceremony, diplomatic treaties, decoration and stories. European glass beads were introduced as trade goods and the Haudenosaunee produce beaded souvenirs for tourist trade. Students will explore sewing beads to a surface with a needle and thread using appliqué, edging and raised beadwork techniques, and apply these skills to the creation of original work.
Responsibilities: The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching and teaching-related activities, including course outline development, studio preparation, lectures, critiques, grading, mid-term evaluations, and final evaluations/reviews. They will also be responsible for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines.
Qualifications: The successful applicant should have a terminal degree in art, design or a relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience. Experience teaching at the post-secondary level is considered an asset, and equivalent relevant experience will be considered. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills are required, as well as demonstrated leadership and experience promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.
