Job Overview

We are seeking a Senior Commercial Lawyer to join our team at Scotiabank, a leading bank in the Americas. As a Senior Commercial Lawyer, you will be responsible for providing expert legal advice and counsel to a broad range of stakeholders on matters relating to Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing and Sanctions, and Anti-Bribery & Corruption.

About the Role

  • This is a senior-level role that requires excellent management, relationship building, and communication skills.
  • The successful candidate will work closely with senior management to provide advice and counsel on a broad range of legal issues.
  • You will also be responsible for obtaining consensus support for initiatives and achieving successful outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal analysis, documentation, negotiation, preparation, review, research, and advice and counsel to bank stakeholders on complex matters in relation to new and existing programs.
  • Research legal issues of substantial complexity on a national or regional basis and propose federal and provincial legislation to evaluate impact on the Bank.
  • Represent the Bank at meetings or on committees with government, public, and private organizations.
  • Direct the activity of outside counsel.
  • Recommend and/or carry out the course of action to be taken regarding ongoing matters.
  • Superintend the work of counsel and staff within a group, including setting work standards, methods, and procedures within the Department in accordance with company-wide policies and appraising work performance.

Requirements

  • A graduate from a recognized Canadian law school and a member in good standing of the Bar in a Canadian common law jurisdiction.
  • Broad experience acquired either at the Bank or another financial institution or large law firm in commercial law with emphasis on the legal structure around retail banking, commercial banking, and insurance.
  • Specific knowledge of the legal issues of each subject area.
  • Experience in dealing with regulators and industry associations.
  • Superior negotiation skills.
