Job Title: Peer Support Specialist

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Support Specialist to join our team at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing support and guidance to individuals living with mental illness, addiction, and homelessness in the Downtown Eastside community.

Job Summary:

The Peer Support Specialist will work collaboratively with our interdisciplinary team to provide peer-specific relationships, education, and support to clients. You will assist clients in accessing health and social services, accompany them to appointments, and provide ongoing education and support to help them achieve their goals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Build and maintain peer-specific relationships with clients
  • Assist clients in accessing health and social services
  • Accompany clients to appointments and schedule follow-up appointments as needed
  • Liaise and coordinate with research team to improve clinical follow-up
  • Outreach clients for clinic appointments and home care visits
  • Liaise with interprofessional healthcare team for support and communicate outcomes
  • Participate in events relevant to client goals and community engagement
  • Provide clients with education on their consumer rights and grievance procedures
Requirements:
  • Recent experience in mental health, addictions, homelessness, and/or social services
  • Experience in a peer support training program
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a downtown environment
  • Ability to identify and work to increase client strengths
  • Ability to effectively and safely resolve crisis situations
