Job Title: Peer Support Specialist

Join our team at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS as a Peer Support Specialist, where you will play a vital role in supporting individuals living with mental illness and substance use disorders.

Job Summary:

The Peer Support Specialist will work collaboratively with the interprofessional health care team to provide peer-specific relationships with clients, supervise client consumption of iOAT and illicit substances, and assist in nurse-led responses to overdoses. This role requires a strong understanding of harm reduction principles, community integration, and recovery in mental illness and substance use.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Build and maintain peer-specific relationships with clients, providing consistent and proactive engagement.
  • Supervise client consumption of iOAT and illicit substances, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.
  • Assist in nurse-led responses to overdoses, providing critical support and care.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional health care team to develop and implement care plans, ensuring clients receive comprehensive support and services.
  • Provide education and support to clients on their consumer rights, grievance procedures, and access to community resources.
  • Participate in internal and multi-stakeholder groups, sharing expertise and knowledge to improve peer work and client outcomes.
Requirements:
  • Diploma in community social services or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of recent, related work experience in mental health, addictions, homelessness, and/or social services, including one year of service planning experience.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Class 5 Driver's License preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of primary health care and care provision by an interprofessional team.
  • Understanding of harm reduction principles and activities.
  • Basic knowledge of diagnoses, treatment, and support resources in mental illness, substance use, physical health, and psychopharmacology.
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, providing flexible and creative services.
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a transdisciplinary team.
