Job Title: Peer Support Specialist

Job Summary:

The BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS is seeking a Peer Support Specialist to join our team at the Hope to Health Supervised Consumption Site. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will work collaboratively with clients, healthcare teams, and research teams to provide support, education, and advocacy to individuals living with mental illness, addiction, and/or homelessness.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build relationships with clients and provide consistent and proactive engagement
  • Assist clients with accessing health and social services
  • Accompany clients to appointments and schedule follow-up appointments as needed
  • Liaise and coordinate with research teams to improve clinical follow-up
  • Outreach clients for clinic appointments, home care visits, and other services
  • Liaise with interprofessional healthcare teams for support and communicate outcomes
  • Participate in events relevant to client goals and community engagement
  • Provide clients with education on their consumer rights and grievance procedures within the larger healthcare system
  • Provide individual and group support for clients on empowerment, self-help education, practical information, resources, life skills, and demonstrations

Requirements:

  • Recent, related work experience with an emphasis on mental health, addictions, homelessness, and/or social services
  • Experience in community social services or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (an asset)

Working Conditions:

The Peer Support Specialist will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, healthcare teams, and research teams. The Peer Support Specialist will also have a strong understanding of harm reduction principles, mental health, addiction, and homelessness.
