Job Summary

Island Health is seeking a skilled Mental Health Specialist to join our team in providing high-quality care to individuals in need. As a Mental Health Specialist, you will play a critical role in assessing and treating individuals with mental health and addiction issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clinical Assessment and Treatment

You will conduct thorough assessments of individuals to identify their mental health and addiction needs, and develop treatment plans to address these needs.

Crisis Intervention and Risk Assessment

You will provide crisis intervention and risk assessment services to individuals in need, using your expertise to de-escalate situations and provide support.

Collaboration and Communication

You will work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to individuals, and communicate effectively with clients, families, and other stakeholders.

Education and Training

You will provide education and training to clients and families on mental health and addiction issues, and support them in developing coping strategies and skills.

Requirements
  • Education and Experience

You must have a Baccalaureate Degree in a health-related discipline from an approved post-secondary institution, and at least two years of recent experience in a related field.

Skills and Abilities

You must possess excellent interpersonal and clinical skills, including crisis intervention, stabilization, de-escalation, and brief psychotherapy. You must also be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Knowledge and Competencies

You must have knowledge of mental health and addiction issues, psychiatric and suicide/homicide risk assessments, and crisis intervention and response techniques. You must also be able to operate a personal computer with a variety of Windows-based software and other office equipment.
