Job Summary

Island Health is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health Support Specialist to join our team. As a Crisis Response Counselor, you will work with adults experiencing mental health and addiction issues, providing immediate support, assessment, and short-term psychotherapeutic services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide triage and urgent clinical response to individuals in crisis
  • Assess and address mental health and addiction needs, developing personalized treatment plans
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and community agencies to ensure comprehensive care
  • Participate in planning priorities for service delivery, focusing on adults with mental health and addiction issues
  • Travel may be required, with transportation arrangements meeting Island Health's operational requirements
Requirements
  • Baccalaureate degree in a health-related discipline from an approved post-secondary institution
  • Recognized post-basic education related to mental illness and/or alcohol and drug addiction
  • Two years' recent experience in crisis intervention and risk assessment, such as policing, crisis counseling, or paramedicine
  • Valid BC Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated competence in addiction and mental illness treatment, congruent with Island Health's framework and standards
  • Interpersonal and clinical skills, including crisis intervention, stabilization, de-escalation, and brief psychotherapy
  • Organizational, problem-solving, and teaching skills
  • Judgment, observation, and client assessment skills, tact, and empathy
