Island Health is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Support Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will play a vital part in providing support and guidance to individuals experiencing mental health challenges.

As a Mental Health Support Specialist, you will work closely with clients to help them understand their illness, develop coping mechanisms, and achieve their rehabilitation goals. You will also collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of professionals to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care.

Qualifications: Education, Training And Experience
  • Possess a Diploma in Community Social Services, such as Mental Health Worker, Community Health Worker, or Social Services Worker. This should include post-secondary education in counseling skills training.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act and the Guardianship Act.
  • Exhibit a thorough understanding of available community programs, their interrelationships, and their role in delivering care.
  • Comprehend the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation and employ a client-centered approach.
  • Have a minimum of two years of recent experience working with individuals experiencing mental illness. This should include teaching life skills or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Skills And Abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain therapeutic relationships with clients, guiding them to understand their illness and the rehabilitation process.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in employing aggressive behavior management techniques when necessary.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, capable of acting independently when supervisor guidance is unavailable.
  • Valid BC Driver's License. In some cases, the ability to obtain a Class 4 Driver's License may be required.
  • Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate relevant equipment.
