Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Winter Operator to join our team at the City of Hamilton. As a Winter Operator, you will be responsible for performing winter operation duties, including operating, inspecting, and maintaining various equipment and vehicles for snow removal, clearing, and material application operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain various pieces of equipment and vehicles, including industrial size snow blowers, single and tandem axle sander/salter/plow trucks, backhoes, tractors, front end loaders, and plow with wing.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections and maintain related documentation as per MTO and City of Hamilton policies and procedures.
  • Interact with the general public, representatives of external agencies, supervisors, and co-workers in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, pathways, roads by shovelling, ploughing, blowing, sanding, or salting.
  • Perform duties in various locations of the Transportation Operations & Maintenance Division, including filling potholes, shovelling, manual labour, traffic control, operation of various power tools, vehicles, equipment, ground restoration duties, litter/bulk pick up, and working around water.
Requirements
  • Previous operator experience related to roadway and sidewalk snow plowing/spreading/removal operations.
  • Previous road maintenance experience of winter and summer programs.
  • Ability to operate vehicles, tools, and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills to interact with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Book 7, and Hours of Service Regulations.
  • Valid Class "D" Licence with a "Z" endorsement and an abstract clear of demerit points, infractions, and pending infractions.
Working Conditions

This position requires working in adverse road and weather conditions, including weekends, nights, and on-callouts. The successful candidate must be able to lift a minimum of 23kgs and occasionally up to 45 kg.
