Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Winter Labourer, Roads to join our team at the City of Hamilton. As a key member of our Transportation Operations & Maintenance Division, you will play a vital role in maintaining and repairing our roadways and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform strenuous labouring duties, including climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, stooping, walking, shoveling, and handling materials to maintain and repair roadside drainage, hard surface, and loose top maintenance and winter control programs.
  • Operate and maintain various pieces of equipment, including pick-up trucks, mechanical equipment, and associated implements, tractors, sidewalk equipment, loaders, and other road maintenance tools.
  • Perform basic inspections and minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Work as part of a team within a crew setting, with some duties requiring independent ability.
  • Interact with the general public, representatives of external agencies, supervisors, and co-workers in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Adhere to the City of Hamilton's Corporate Culture and Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated roads maintenance experience and training related to duties and programs listed above.
  • Ability to perform labouring duties, such as shoveling, raking, loading/unloading tools and/or equipment, clean and shovel snow, spread sand/salt by hand in a continuous capacity for a substantial portion of the day.
  • Previous experience, training, and competent ability to operate tools and equipment associated with road and sidewalk maintenance in a safe manner.
  • Availability and ability to work shifts and on callouts, including weekends, nights, etc., with crew as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow detailed procedures, instructions, and take direction.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, including Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, W.H.M.I.S. legislation, Book 7 Traffic Control, and Minimum Maintenance Standards.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 30 kgs., with an occasional requirement to lift up to 45 kgs.
  • Solid interpersonal skills required to assist and respond to all scenarios and situations in regard to the general public, co-workers, supervisors, and any other stakeholders.
  • Valid Class "G" Licence and a Driver's abstract clear of any demerit points and pending infractions.
Working Conditions

The successful candidate will be required to work in various locations of the Transportation Operations & Maintenance Division, including rural and urban settings, and in adverse road and weather conditions.

This is a physically demanding role that requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing circumstances.
