Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Child Life Specialist to join our team at BC Children's Hospital. As a Child Life Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing therapeutic services to children and youth, promoting their social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients to identify their individual needs and develop personalized care plans.
  • Provide preparation, alternate focus, and coping skills coaching for patients undergoing medical procedures, minimizing stress and anxiety during hospitalization.
  • Plan and implement activities that foster continued growth and development in children and youth, including therapeutic and medical play opportunities.
  • Monitor patients to determine if the care plan is meeting established goals and make adjustments as needed.
  • Document assessments, care plans, recommendations, and interventions in accordance with established formats, policies, and legal requirements.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in an area related to Child Development with required coursework for child life certification.
  • Meets the eligibility requirements to write the Child Life Certification Examination.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and interact with patients and families, applying theories of human growth and development, family systems, and cultural diversity.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent and communicate the role of child life to others.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work, work as a member of an interdisciplinary team, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate related equipment and physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to developing knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments related to Indigenous reconciliation and cultural safety.
