Job Title: Child Life Specialist, Child and Youth Therapeutic Services

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Child Life Specialist to join our team at BC Children's Hospital. As a Child Life Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing emotional support and therapeutic interventions to children and youth undergoing medical procedures and hospitalization.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients to identify their unique needs and develop personalized care plans.
  • Provide preparation, coping skills coaching, and psychosocial support to minimize stress and anxiety during hospitalization.
  • Develop and implement therapeutic activities that promote growth, development, and adaptation to the hospital environment.
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams to ensure comprehensive care and support for patients and families.
  • Document assessments, care plans, and interventions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in an area related to Child Development with required coursework for child life certification.
  • Meets the eligibility requirements to write the Child Life Certification Examination.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and interact with patients and families applying theories of human growth and development, family systems, and cultural diversity.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent and communicate the role of child life to others.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents.
