Physics Laboratory Instructor

About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Technician IV, Physics to join our team at Douglas College. As a key member of our faculty, you will be responsible for providing laboratory instruction, evaluation, and supervision of students in the physics laboratory.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide laboratory instruction and demonstration related to college physics courses, including instructing students on laboratory procedures, demonstrating the correct use of equipment, and supervising students to ensure compliance with safety procedures.
- Evaluate student work and performance in relation to laboratory requirements, including assessing written work, evaluating student performance, and assigning final laboratory grades.
- Prepare materials for use in the laboratory, subject to the curricula approval of the Physics faculty, including assessing new information, setting and evaluating laboratory quizzes and exams, and maintaining and updating laboratory manuals.
- Perform other related duties, including creating and maintaining report sheets, maintaining records of physics laboratory grades, and setting up laboratory equipment and demonstrations.
Requirements
- Good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).
- B.Sc. in Physics from a recognized post-secondary educational institution or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Good working knowledge of course content, operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus, and modern techniques pertaining to the instruction of Physics courses.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing, and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and the public.
- Demonstrated experience speaking to groups and preparing written materials for lab assignments.
- Excellent working knowledge of preventative measures required of laboratory equipment.
- Ability to maintain current knowledge in the field of Physics.
- Proven ability to effectively demonstrate proper laboratory techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum direct supervision as well as establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Required to set up laboratory equipment, which may include lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 40 lbs.
