Job Summary

The Clinical Extern Program Coordinator is an integral member of the healthcare team at Halton Healthcare, responsible for supporting the development and execution of a comprehensive Clinical Extern Program. This program provides oversight to Clinical Externs who are clinical students working as unregulated care providers at our healthcare facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive Clinical Extern Program to ensure high-quality, safe care for patients and families.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, orientation, and competency evaluation of Clinical Externs to ensure a smooth integration into our healthcare teams.
  • Create, adapt, and deliver education/training and learning resources to support Clinical Externs in their practice.
  • Collaborate closely with Professional Practice Clinicians, Patient Care Managers, Clinical Resource Nurses, and Team Leads to ensure the integration of Clinical Externs at the organizational and unit level.
  • Provide on-unit support for Clinical Extern professional development at our hospital sites.
  • Participate in competency evaluation and performance management to ensure the highest standards of care.
  • Collaborate with the student clinical placement program to ensure connection and clarity between externs and clinical students.
Qualifications
  • Regulated Healthcare Professional in good standing with their Professional College.
  • Three (3) years related health care experience.
  • Current certificate in Basic Life Support by the Heart and Stroke Foundation preferred.
  • Passion for and experience with mentorship, preceptorship, and adult learning principles.
  • Strong relationship building skills and ability to collaborate across various levels of leadership.
  • Exceptionally patient and caregiver focused with excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond positively to change, work independently, and lead continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent analytical and data management skills.
  • Highly proficient using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint.
  • Proven high level of maturity, discretion, and ability to maintain impartiality, objectivity, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated evidence of commitment to continuous learning through pursuit of educational endeavors.
  • Ability to travel between hospital sites.
