Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Legal Support Specialist to join our team in Laval, Quebec. As a key member of our litigation team, you will be responsible for providing expert legal support to our lawyers and ensuring the smooth operation of our law office.
Main Responsibilities
As a Legal Support Specialist, your primary duties will include:
- Preparing and editing complex legal documents, such as correspondence, factums, and motions
- Drafting and reviewing standard legal documents, pleadings, and correspondence
- Exercising initiative and judgment in the absence of lawyers, including negotiating extensions of time and prioritizing incoming communications
- Managing lawyers' calendars, scheduling appointments, and coordinating appearances
- Responding to a wide range of telephone inquiries based on knowledge of case files
- Composing complex correspondence and establishing, maintaining, and revising lawyers' files
- Performing research, reviewing, and preparing documents in accordance with project objectives and in consultation with lawyers, law clerks, or legal office managers
- Providing training to legal assistants and answering technical questions
- Exercising initiative to propose, develop, and maintain standard office precedents and procedures
- Performing additional duties as requested, such as reception relief, maintaining lists of witnesses and subpoenas, requesting fees for payment from the claims department, participating in arranging lawyers' files for easy access during trials, informing witnesses of scheduled court appearances, and other miscellaneous duties as assigned
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will require:
- A college diploma in legal secretarial and 5+ years of litigation experience
- Ability to proof and edit legal documents
- Motivation, self-starter skills, and the ability to work productively under pressure
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and client service skills, professional and positive demeanor
- Superior organization and priority setting skills, strong work ethic, and ability to multi-task
- Ability to be conceptual and a creative problem-solving skills
- Intermediate MS Office skills and knowledge of standard office equipment and word processing
