About the Role
The System Designer Fire Alarm will create accurate and complete fire alarm system designs and submittal packages to meet project requirements. You will provide detailed information and submittals to communicate design and operation to customers, consultants, and subcontractors.
Responsibilities
- Organize and plan your workload, direct less experienced design team members, and collaborate with other design teams when required.
- Facilitate reviews of initial designs of medium complexity to provide value-engineered/code-compliant solutions where required.
- Coordinate with CAD Support Technicians to prepare fully detailed technical submissions with complete detailed schematics and drawings to meet design criteria.
- Oversee CAD Support Technicians in preparing project submissions for medium-complexity systems, including system operation, drawings, and calculations.
- Complete detailed calculations to verify system design meets code and standard requirements.
- Participate in pre/post-project design meetings and attend customer/site coordination meetings as applicable.
- Develop a bill of materials to facilitate construction.
- Examine completed submissions with CAD Support Technician for equipment application, compatibility, and compliance with specifications and scope.
- Provide support to Project Managers to assist in maintaining and/or improving project margins.
- Review equipment applications, research outside purchases, and ensure equipment compatibility.
- Answer questions from customers, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction as they arise.
- Collaborate with Project Manager during system commissioning to verify system performance against the design.
- Support field technical staff and subcontractors with technical support and design inquiries.
- Provide pre-sales estimate support to sales and project management teams.
- Mentor and guide CAD Support Technicians in completing project deliverables.
- Perform duties of a CAD person on assigned projects if a CAD person is not available.
- Direct, support, and review work products provided by CAD Support Technicians.
- Monitor actual hours to ensure all time is properly coded to projects and within originally estimated hours sold.
Requirements
- Three years minimum experience with design in the fire alarm industry and software applications to create Shop Drawings and Product Data Books.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Government/Provincial Fire Alarm Code Requirements.
- Demonstrated technical aptitude in Fire Alarm Systems.
- Advanced computer skills, particularly drafting tools (AutoCAD), Microsoft Word, Excel, Salesforce, MS Teams, Adobe Acrobat, and BlueBeam.
- Advanced Communication and Organizational skills.
- Certification/Membership with the Canada Fire Alarm Association (CFAA) is preferred.
