Job Summary and Requirements

The Department of Justice in Yukon is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to fill the role of Correctional Officer Trainee. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of inmates at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Carry out day-to-day operational and program activities under the direction of the Manager, Correctional Services.
  • Maintain security, safety, good order, discipline, and care of adult inmates by providing orientation, direction, guidance, and programming.
  • Engage inmates in a process that promotes positive change in a productive and supportive environment.
Requirements:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Proficient speaking, reading, and writing in English.
  • Experience applying and enforcing rules and regulations.
  • Experience giving direction, coaching, mentoring, and providing feedback to individuals and/or groups.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary coursework and/or training in criminology, justice, corrections, social services, or a related field.
  • Experience in Security, Law Enforcement, Supervisory, or Customer Services roles.
Working Conditions:
  • Rotating shift work, including weekends and statutory holidays.
  • Occasional travel within and outside the Territory.
  • Heavy lifting.

  • A competitive rate of pay for the first eight weeks, increasing to a higher rate after successful completion of training.
  • A comprehensive training program, including Corrections Officer Basic Training (COBT) and on-the-job training.
