Department of Justice
The Department of Justice is dedicated to maintaining a safe, secure, and healthy environment for all residents. We foster strong relationships to support effective governance and promote safe communities. Our department is comprised of dynamic teams of professionals committed to positively impacting the lives of individuals in Yukon.
Under the supervision of the Manager of Correctional Services, this role is integral to the daily operations and program activities at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre. The Corrections Officer Trainee will work various shifts, focusing on ensuring security, safety, order, discipline, and the welfare of adult inmates. This involves providing orientation, guidance, and programming aimed at encouraging inmates to engage in positive behavioral change within a supportive and respectful environment. This position is classified as a Peace Officer under the Criminal Code of Canada.
Compensation: The hourly wage starts at $29.57 for the initial training period, increasing to $37.19 upon successful completion of training.
Qualifications:
Applicants must demonstrate how they meet the following essential qualifications:
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
- Proficiency in English, including speaking, reading, and writing
- Experience in applying and enforcing rules and regulations
- Experience in providing direction, coaching, and feedback
- Post-secondary education or training in criminology, justice, corrections, social services, or a related field is advantageous
- Experience in security, law enforcement, supervisory, or customer service roles may be beneficial
Equivalency in education and experience will also be considered.

Employment Conditions:
Successful candidates must maintain:
- Valid security and vulnerable sector clearance
- Completion of the Corrections Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT), FITCO, or PARE
- Medical clearance prior to the first day of work
- Valid Class 5 driver's license
- First Aid and CPR certification (to be obtained within six months of hire)
Job Requirements:
- Rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays
- Occasional travel may be required
- Ability to perform heavy lifting
- Uniform wearing is mandatory
