The Research Operations Administrator provides guidance and support to the departmental project teams, contractors, and stakeholders. This role is responsible for monitoring and reporting on project and research core fund budgets and ensuring projects meet milestones. The Administrator supervises and directs assigned research staff and oversees the daily operational activities of the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development and monitoring of research projects and research core funded budgets within the context of granting agency guidelines, operational demands, and resource constraints.
  • Collaborate and consult with Principal Investigators to analyze situations and project future needs and develop business plans to source future funds and maximize research capabilities within available resources.
  • Monitor research cost centre expenditures and highlight reports for PI's on fiscal performance as it relates to resource utilization and expenditure patterns.
  • Identify issues and problem solve to facilitate productive relationships with collaborators, funding agencies, and external stakeholders.
  • Direct and supervise assigned research staff, establishing responsibilities, reviewing workload, and adjusting schedules to ensure operational requirements are met.
  • Represent the department on the BC Cancer Research Administrators Committee and provide input and recommendations on human resource, financial, and grant process issues as they pertain to Research Operations.
  • Work closely with the Office of Research Administration (ORA) to provide consistency and enhancement of processes and initiatives within the research environment.
  • Provide leadership in consultation with the Technology Development Office in the appropriate handling of research sub-awards, contracts, and agreements related to consortium agreement, technology transfer, intellectual property, and memoranda of understanding.
  • Ensure BC Cancer and PHSA policies and procedures are adhered to by all members of the department.
  • Oversee assigned research core budget, authorize requisitions, and approve payments for items such as office supplies, services, maintenance contracts of equipment, and honorariums in accordance with established guidelines.

Requirements

  • A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in a recognized business or sciences program plus a minimum of three (3) years' recent, related experience in a research environment and experience in project management.
  • A minimum of one year of supervisory experience is required.
  • Demonstrate success in broad business skills including project management, development of business, strategic, financial, marketing, and forecasting plans and human resources operations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of research operations in a unionized setting, including a thorough knowledge of labour relations and the application of Collective Agreements.
  • Ability to supervise and/or provide leadership in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Demonstrated interpersonal skills to facilitate teamwork and team building.
  • Demonstrate oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and accomplish objectives in an effective and efficient manner. Ability to prioritize workload to successfully meet deadlines and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Knowledge of and experience working in a research environment, including managing the pre and post grant application process.
  • Advanced skills in word processing, spreadsheet presentation, and database software applications.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
