About the Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will work in collaboration with and support all members of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine by performing various functions relating to the pre and post-analytical phases of testing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform specimen procurement, receipt, and processing, as well as data entry and media preparation.
  • Assist with clerical duties, sterilization, and loading specimens on an analyzer.
  • Manage supplies, troubleshoot issues, and provide customer service.
  • Ensure positive patient identification and accurate specimen handling.
  • Work rotating shifts, weekends, and/or holidays, and may be required to work off-site.
About You

We are looking for a candidate with a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent, and who has successfully completed the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and has current registration with CSMLS.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects.
  • Ability to perform procedures with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Basic computer skills, with Meditech experience preferred.
  • Access to reliable transportation, as travel may be required.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, with French preferred.
Hours and Compensation

This is a long assignment, full-time position with 75 hours bi-weekly. The successful candidate may be eligible for our benefits package, which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan.

The hourly rate for this position is $26.27.
