About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department by performing various functions related to the pre and post-analytical phases of testing.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Specimen procurement, receipt, and processing
  • Data entry and media preparation
  • Supply management and troubleshooting
  • Customer service and communication with stakeholders

You will work collaboratively with laboratory staff to ensure accurate and efficient testing processes. Positive patient identification and accurate specimen handling are essential to this role.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of medical terminology, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. You will also be required to maintain a professional appearance and adhere to all applicable NSH/PLM policies and procedures.

We offer a competitive hourly rate of $26.27 and a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and life insurance coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan.

About You

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Has a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent
  • Has successfully completed the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and has current registration with CSMLS
  • Has strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Has a basic understanding of medical terminology
  • Has strong attention to detail and manual dexterity
  • Is able to accurately number and label specimens and file slides/requisitions
  • Is able to adapt to updates and changes in operating procedures
  • Has basic computer skills and experience with Meditech is preferred
  • Has access to reliable transportation as travel may be required
  • Has competencies in other languages, with French being an asset
