Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) - Western Zone, Valley Regional Hospital

We're seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Valley Regional Hospital in the Western Zone. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will work in collaboration with and support all members of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM) by performing various functions relating to the pre and post-analytical phases of testing.
About the Role
- Perform specimen procurement, receipt, and processing, as well as data entry, media/reagent/smear preparation, sterilization, and clerical duties.
- Load specimens on an analyzer and perform troubleshooting and customer service activities.
- Ensure positive patient identification and accurate specimen handling.
- Work rotating shifts, weekends, and/or holidays, and interact with various stakeholders and clients.
- Adhere to all applicable NSH/PLM policies and procedures, and maintain a professional appearance and excellent customer service.
About You
- Recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent.
- Successful completion of the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and current registration with CSMLS.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, basic understanding of medical terminology, and strong attention to detail.
- Manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects, and ability to perform procedures with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to accurately number/label specimens and file slides/requisitions, and adapt to updates/changes in operating procedures.
- Basic computer skills, Meditech experience is preferred, and access to reliable transportation as travel may be required.
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred.
What We Offer
- Permanent, Part-Time position; 37.5 hours bi-weekly.
- $26.27 hourly.
