Job Description:
As a Fire Training Specialist, you will play a crucial role in supporting the learning process by demonstrating the use of fire training equipment and reinforcing applied pre-learned principles and theory related to lab skills and procedures.
You will work with faculty members to establish an appropriately supportive learning environment for students, providing guidance and assistance in 'live fire' and/or practical situations. Your specific duties will include:
- Academic Delivery Supports: Retrieves, sets up, and dismantles fire training equipment, supplies, and resources to meet curriculum needs
- Laboratory Safety Standards: Ensures all lab safety standards and standard operating procedure requirements are being followed
- Student Contact and Record Keeping: Assists faculty by organizing and facilitating student practice, demonstrating and reinforcing applied pre-learned principles and theory by providing feedback using pre-developed skills checklists and the application of principles and theory
Additional responsibilities may include collaborating with program coordinators and faculty to formulate plans of action for students struggling to demonstrate skill competency, consulting with faculty and students to plan activities to meet individual students' needs, and ensuring students are performing tactical exercises in a safe manner.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, you must possess:
- Valid Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder Certification
- Successfully completed a one-year post-secondary certificate in a relevant field of study
- At least three years' experience working in a pre-hospital setting (paramedicine and/or fire service)
- Demonstrated ability to communicate information in a clear concise manner
- Interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships with various stakeholders
- Ability to self-direct, work independently as well as a team member
- Knowledge and understanding of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and awareness of health and safety rules and regulations
- Computer skills using Microsoft Suite
- Standard First Aid & CPR Basic Life Support with AED certification
- Proven analytical, critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and manage time effectively
