Job Title: Part-Time Academic Training Specialist

About the Role

This part-time position supports the learning process by demonstrating equipment use and reinforcing applied pre-learned principles/theory related to lab skills, procedures, and assessment.

The incumbent works to establish a supportive learning environment for students, providing guidance and assistance in "live fire" and/or practical situations.

This role involves academic delivery supports, including:

  • Retrieving, setting up, and dismantling fire training equipment, supplies, and resources to meet curriculum needs.
  • Ensuring the training equipment is safe and returned securely to its designated location.
  • Sharing technical expertise and advice with academic staff and students as required.
  • Ensuring all lab safety standards and standard operating procedure requirements are being followed.
  • In consultation with faculty, making recommendations and designing lab setups for skill development based on current practice used in community agencies and in accordance with standards of practice.
  • Attending and participating in staff meetings, providing observations on student skill progression, attendance, and problems; attending curriculum committee meetings, providing input regarding firefighter skills, curriculum review.
  • Assisting faculty with the update of the student/faculty lab resource manual.

The position also involves student contact and record-keeping, including:

  • Assisting faculty by organizing and facilitating student practice, demonstrating, and reinforcing applied pre-learned principles/theory by providing feedback using pre-developed skills checklists and the application of principles and theory.
  • Monitoring, recording, and tracking students' progress and readiness of firefighter skills for proficiency and safety using manual tracking sheets and communicating any concerns to students and faculty.
  • Collaborating with program coordinators and faculty to formulate a plan of action and provides individual coaching to students struggling to demonstrate skill competency. Consulting with faculty and students to plan activities to meet individual students' needs.
  • Ensuring students perform tactical exercises in a safe manner.
About You

We are looking for an experienced candidate who possesses the following qualifications:

  • A valid Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder certification.
  • Successfully completed a one-year postsecondary certificate in a relevant field of study.
  • At least three years of experience working in a pre-hospital setting (paramedicine and/or fire service) and experience in training and demonstrating medical skills with the ability to do all aspects of emergency medical response.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate information in a clear concise manner.
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to self-direct, work independently as well as a team member.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and awareness of health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Computer skills using Microsoft Suite.
  • Standard First Aid & CPR Basic Life Support with AED certification.
  • Proven analytical, critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and manage time effectively.

The salary for this position is estimated at $25.34 - $35.83 per hour, based on location and industry standards.
