The Role

The HR Business Partner will collaborate with the Human Resources team to provide leadership and consultative services, ensuring progressive people practices and sustainable workforce capability align with the institution's strategic direction. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing interpretation, technical expertise, and consultative services to leaders, staff, and faculty regarding human resources requirements, policies, procedures, terms and conditions of employment, collective agreements, and applicable legislation.
  • Liaising with unions and associations, responding to issues and concerns on behalf of management, and working collaboratively to improve working relationships and conditions.
  • Assisting with preparation and research for collective bargaining and supporting the institution's bargaining team.
  • Counseling managers to ensure documentation exists for effectively dealing with issues and concerns.
  • Investigating and responding to concerns and issues before they become formalized grievances or complaints.
  • Attending and facilitating investigations on sensitive issues such as harassment complaints or staff disputes.
  • Providing HR expertise in developing action plans to correct performance or behavior.
  • Advising leaders on the progressive discipline process, including assessing whether discipline is appropriate, identifying potential risks, and preparing relevant documentation.
  • In partnership with leadership and the HR team, identifying opportunities and challenges, developing strategies related to process improvement, succession planning, restructuring, downsizing, budget changes, and workforce planning.
  • Conducting research and surveys with other organizations, presenting recommendations to management.
  • Carrying out people and culture department research to support collective bargaining and facilitate planning.
  • Developing and overseeing the implementation of an institution-wide recruitment strategy.
  • Strategizing with hiring leaders to determine hiring needs, suitable candidate characteristics, selection and interview processes, and competition timelines.
  • Creating job postings, identifying effective job boards, and determining steps and dates for successful hiring timelines.
  • Providing interview feedback, maintaining eligibility lists, and preparing offer letter requests.
  • Monitoring the collection and storage of competition records for recruitment statistics, including numbers and types of positions, advertising costs, and timelines.
