About the Role

The Property Accountant is a key member of the Morguard team, responsible for ensuring the timely and accurate completion of all accounting activities for an assigned portfolio of real estate investments. This role requires a high level of attention to detail and organizational skills, as well as strong analytical and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
  1. General Accounting

Complete day-to-day transactions, including recording transactions to journals, posting to ledgers, calculating trial balances, and completing bad debt provisions, to maintain an accurate and transparent accounting process.

Property Accounting Reporting

Produce a variety of financial reports and statements, including monthly and quarterly financial statement packages, annual budgets, and other reports as required, to ensure adherence to statutory accounting principles.

Bank Reconciliation

Complete bank reconciliation and address any outstanding discrepancies between the bank and company statements in a proactive manner to ensure accuracy of statements.

Support to Accounts Receivable and Collections

Assist the Accounts Receivable department and Property Management personnel in reconciling tenants' accounts and follow up on any outstanding accounts to ensure timely receipt of payment.

Budgeting for Recoveries

Complete the accounting portion of the budget and provide assistance, as required, in re-forecasting, variances analysis, and reporting, and troubleshoot revenue modeling to support accurate re-forecast and budgeting processes.

Year-End Adjustments

Ensure year-end adjustments and billing for common area/operating costs and realty taxes are processed on time and accurately, and ensure revised rental notices are sent to tenants for the coming year on time to ensure maximum collection and accurate budgeting.

Support to Annual Audit Process

Assist with year-end audit processes through the preparation of the head office/site accounting packages and the creation of the year-end file to ensure timely and accurate completion of all processes.

Requirements
  • Previous experience in the real estate industry is an asset
  • Attention to detail
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good quantitative analysis skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of MS Office applications
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant accounting experience
  • College Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Business Administration or equivalent
  • Previous YARDI experience is an asset
