Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Professional Standards Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Fire Prevention Division, you will be responsible for developing, facilitating, and monitoring training programs for our staff. Your expertise will help us maintain high standards of professionalism and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
About the Role
This full-time position involves creating individualized training plans, developing technical training programs, and conducting research to stay current with codes and standards. You will also represent our organization on various committees and associations, maintaining thorough records of your activities. With a strong focus on customer service, teamwork, and conflict management, you will work collaboratively with our team to achieve our goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver training programs for Fire Prevention Personnel
- Conduct research and keep current with codes and standards, operational practices, and industry best standards
- Review policies, standard operating procedures, and guidelines, recommending changes or additions as needed
- Represent HRM on various committees and associations
- Maintain accurate records of all activities
- Prepare daily logs and reports based on functions performed
- Assess and validate individual staff
- Perform ongoing needs analysis to identify training gaps and develop training to correct those gaps
- Create budgets for training costs and write detailed reports to justify expenditures
- Oversee general administrative duties related to training
Qualifications and Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will require:
- Level 2 Fire Inspector Certification or equivalent qualification
- Minimum eight (8) years' relevant experience administering the Fire Safety Act and Regulations, Building Code Act and Regulations, and/or related legislation
- Demonstrated capacity and competency to inspect buildings, structures, facilities, and occupancies as defined by the Nova Scotia Building Code and Nova Scotia Fire Code
- Valid Nova Scotia driver's license
- Considerable experience inspecting complex buildings, such as high-rise or industrial facilities
- Certificate or degree in Adult Education would be an asset
- Certificate or experience in eLearning instructional design would be an asset
Technical / Job-Specific Knowledge and Abilities
You will need a sound knowledge of:
- The HRM Charter, Nova Scotia Building and Fire Codes, Nova Scotia Fire Safety Act, HRM By-laws M200, O109, F100, and B400
- Common law principles, including precedents from Court and Regulatory Body decisions
- Associated construction approval departments and agencies, their procedures, and regulations
- Business-related software and technology, including spreadsheets, databases, word processing, email, FDM, LMS, Microsoft Suite, and Hansen Information System
Security Clearance Requirements
Applicants will be required to complete an employment security screening check.

The ideal candidate will possess analytical thinking, organizational skills, excellent customer service, and strong teamwork and cooperation abilities. They will also have effective communication, conflict management, risk management, decision-making, and values and ethics skills.
Work Status and Hours of Work
This permanent, full-time position offers a regular schedule of 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, with flexibility required due to client demands.
Salary
The estimated salary range for this position is $82,080-$106,220 annually, commensurate with education and experience.
