Job Summary:

The Professional Standards Specialist will be responsible for developing, facilitating, and continuously improving training programs and training plans for Fire Prevention staff. This includes creating individualized training plans for all positions in the Division and developing technical-based training programs for various internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver training programs for Fire Prevention Personnel, ensuring compliance with codes and standards.
  • Conduct research and stay current with industry best practices, operational procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and recommend updates to policies, standard operating procedures, and guidelines.
  • Represent HRM on various committees and associations as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of all activities and prepare reports as needed.

Requirements:

  • Level 2 Fire Inspector Certification or equivalent.
  • Minimum eight (8) years' experience administering the Fire Safety Act and Regulations, Building Code Act and Regulations, and related legislation.
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license.
  • Considerable experience inspecting complex buildings.

Technical Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Detailed knowledge of the HRM Charter, Nova Scotia Building and Fire Codes, and related legislation.
  • Sound knowledge of common law principles and precedents.
  • Knowledge of business-related software and technology.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants will be required to complete an employment security screening check.
