The School of Social Work and Human Service at Thompson Rivers University invites applications for a sessional lecturer to teach the course HUMS 2060: Introduction to Social Work Practice. This course is delivered face-to-face at the Kamloops campus.
Students explore the profession of social work through an examination of the history, philosophical foundation, and contemporary theoretical perspectives. Topics include an overview of social work theories, roles, and practice models, including the relevant Codes of Ethics and Practice Standards, as they apply to individuals, families, and communities.
A primary focus of the course is understanding individuals, families, and communities using a social justice perspective, which examines the social structures that influence people's lives and lead to various sources and forms of oppression and marginalization in Canadian society.
The course objectives include:
- Reflecting on worker values, attitudes, and interactions and how these affect the helping process.
- Examining the historical roots, values, and ideological influences that have shaped social service work in Canada.
- Explaining the purpose, roles, and tasks of generalist social work practice.
- Applying social work ethics, theories, and frameworks to case situations.
- Examining the helping process in the context of personal change systems and planned change theories.
- Examining structural and anti-oppressive practice implications when working with diversity.
Thompson Rivers University is a comprehensive, learner-centered, environmentally responsible institution that serves its regional, national, and international learners and their communities through high-quality and flexible education, training, research, and scholarship.
The university is committed to fostering diversity of thought within its community and welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds.
Qualifications for the position include:
- A Master's degree in Social Work is required, while an earned Doctorate in a relevant field in addition to a graduate credential in Social Work is preferred.
- Successful teaching experience in post-secondary institutions is preferred, with a priority given to candidates with experience teaching entry-level post-secondary students.
- A minimum of five years of professional experience working in a social work capacity is required.
