Established in 2002, the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) is a global coalition of over 150 organizations dedicated to advancing forestland and resource rights of Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, local communities, and women within these groups.

RRI works through partnerships to promote community land rights, secure recognition of these rights, and advocate for sustainable forest management practices. The organization has gained international recognition for its efforts to address issues related to deforestation, poverty, and climate change.

We are seeking an International Land Rights Advocate to join our team in Washington, D.C. or Montreal, Canada. This position will support RRI's advocacy efforts by providing research, analysis, and technical assistance to our partners and stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of international land tenure systems, experience working with indigenous and local communities, and excellent communication and project management skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide research and analysis to inform RRI's advocacy efforts on land rights and sustainable forest management;
  • Support the development of policy briefs, reports, and other materials for RRI's advocacy campaigns;
  • Collaborate with RRI's regional teams to provide technical assistance to partners and stakeholders;
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, and community groups;
  • Develop and implement projects to promote community land rights and sustainable forest management practices;

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as international development, environmental studies, or anthropology;
  • At least 3 years of experience working on land rights and sustainable forest management issues;
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences;
  • Excellent communication and project management skills, with ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Fluency in English and French, with proficiency in Spanish or another relevant language a plus;
  • Experience working with indigenous and local communities, and familiarity with their rights and interests;

Salary: $55,000 - $65,000 per year, depending on experience
