Job Summary

The City of Ottawa is seeking a highly skilled Traffic Assessment Investigator to join our team in the Public Works Department. As a key member of our Traffic Services team, you will be responsible for conducting thorough investigations into traffic safety concerns, analyzing data, and developing strategies to enhance road safety for drivers and pedestrians.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough investigations into traffic safety concerns, including collecting and analyzing data, and identifying root causes of safety issues.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance road safety, including revising speed limits and upgrading traffic control devices.
  • Manage the implementation, monitoring, and assessment of traffic control devices and safety initiatives, such as the Community Safety Zone Program and Adult Crossing Guard Program.
  • Investigate fatal collisions to determine the role of the road and its infrastructure in the cause or severity of those collisions.
  • Prepare detailed reports and recommendations for traffic safety improvements, including sketches, photographs, and field measurements.
Requirements
  • Completion of a 2-year technical diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in traffic investigations, traffic operations, and transportation engineering or an equivalent transportation-related field.
  • Strong knowledge of data collection and research techniques, computer operations, and applications, including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, and to operate field equipment such as TDC-8, sight distance targets, cameras, radar speed guns, and stopwatches.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with stakeholders, including the public, city officials, and other transportation agencies.
