Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Transfusion Medicine Department at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform Immunohematologic tests and duties accurately and reproducibly while exhibiting a working knowledge of the theory, methodology, and equipment required in order to aid in diagnosis and management of a patient.
  • Reception, documentation and storage of specimens, ABO grouping, Rh, antibody screening and cross matching blood, prenatal testing, new-born testing and paternal phenotyping, antibody identification procedures, receipt and storage of blood and blood components from the Canadian Blood Services, release of prepared blood and blood components to the patient's ward or other location for therapeutic use, writing basic interpretation of test results and releasing these to the patient's physician/ward in a timely fashion, maintaining worksheets, logbooks, patient records, etc. as required by law and the policy of the laboratory, routine preventive maintenance of all equipment and operation of equipment effectively, maintaining written records of all quality control, instruments checks etc., preparing solutions and reagents applicable to the tests performed, ability to prioritize work and respond to urgent unpredictable demands for blood bank services in STAT situations, consulting with peers, senior technologists, section supervisor or section head when appropriate relative to abnormal results, panic results or other concerns, exhibiting a co-operative attitude with other staff, congeniality, flexibility in hours of work, reliability and punctuality, ability to work at a variety of duties, and flexibility in learning new procedures, following the code of professional conducts of the CSMLS, assisting with demonstrating procedures to new staff or students as requested, participating in educational and informational programs, communicating effectively with physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel - includes basic interpretation of laboratory test results and explanations of limitations of the test procedure, referring tests to other testing facilities for confirmation etc. after consultation with a senior technologist, participating in Quality Assurance Program, understanding the consequences and impact of errors on the patient, accepting responsibility for his/her work activities, maintaining patient confidentiality, exhibiting understanding and practices safe work habits, exhibiting initiative and independence of action acceptable for his/her level of training and experience, performing other duties as requested by the Charge Technologist or Section Head.
Requirements
  • Active General Registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologist of Ontario (CMLTO) and the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)
  • 2 years' of recent experience and demonstrated achievements in Blood Transfusion (preferred)
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office (Word, Excel, Access) (preferred)
  • Proficiency in the use of Laboratory Information System (preferred)
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance record
  • In accordance with accreditation standards, employment is conditional upon applicant demonstrating proof of visual colour discrimination ability pertinent to the essential duties of the job
