Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Lawyer to join our Clinic Resource Office team at Legal Aid Ontario. As a Staff Lawyer, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality legal services to our clients and contributing to the development of poverty law issues.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Conduct legal research and writing, primarily focused on Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan, and Old Age Security law and related areas.
  2. Develop and maintain a range of publications, including decision summaries, short website postings, and comprehensive research memoranda.
  3. Collaborate with the team to identify and address poverty law issues, and contribute to the development of innovative solutions.
  4. Provide legal advice and opinions to clients and stakeholders, and represent Legal Aid Ontario in various forums.
  5. Stay up-to-date with changes in the law and policy, and apply this knowledge to inform your work.
Requirements
  1. Lawyer (Class L1 licence) member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.
  2. Excellent writing and analytical skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely.
  3. Significant recent experience practicing, and demonstrated expertise in, one or more major areas of clinic law (e.g. social assistance, housing, CPP, EI).
  4. Demonstrated strong interest in clinic law issues and a commitment to social justice.
  5. Demonstrated superior legal research skills with traditional and electronic research sources.
  6. Strong computer skills, including advanced ability with Microsoft Word.
  7. Familiarity with Zoom and Teams.
  8. Adept at working both independently and in a team environment.
  9. Able to work with shifting priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience using the CRO website and practice resources.
  2. Experience practicing in a variety of clinic law areas (e.g. housing, social assistance, CPP, EI, human rights & the Charter).
  3. Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  4. Superior knowledge of administrative law and procedure.
  5. Publication experience.
  6. Court litigation experience.
  7. Experience delivering legal training presentations.
  8. Ability to speak, read and write French.
