About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Safety Manager to join our team at First Student Canada-Transco. As a key member of our operations team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees, customers, and the communities we serve.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with our Regional Safety Directors, Location Managers, and Maintenance teams to develop and implement safety protocols and procedures that meet or exceed industry standards.
  • Conduct thorough incident investigations and root cause analyses to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for our employees, including defensive driving and collision investigation training.
  • Work closely with our Risk Management team to manage claims and litigation, and provide support for workers' compensation and other safety-related initiatives.
  • Monitor and analyze safety performance metrics, including incident rates, injury frequencies, and compliance scores, to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance to our Location Managers and Safety Coordinators to ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, industry associations, and community groups, to stay informed about best practices and emerging trends in safety and risk management.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of safety-related policies, procedures, and programs, including our BeSafe process and Safety Leadership course.
  • Collaborate with our Operations and HR teams to identify and address safety-related issues and concerns, and provide support for employee recruitment, retention, and training initiatives.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive safety manual and other safety-related documentation, including procedures, guidelines, and best practices.
Requirements
  • 2 years of college or equivalent education/experience in a related field, such as safety, transportation, or a related field.
  • 7 years of experience in safety and transportation, including 5 years in fleet transportation management.
  • Strong commitment to safety and a proven track record of implementing effective safety programs and procedures.
  • Excellent leadership, decision-making, and team-building skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels.
  • Strong proficiency in computer literacy, including Microsoft Office products, and experience with other software and systems, such as timekeeping and payroll systems.
  • Advanced skills in technology used to manage operations, including but not limited to, FGA-approved Smart technology, apps, encrypted drives, shared drives, and other Smart technology.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interpret data and perform root cause analysis.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with others in a team setting, and to demonstrate leadership, decision-making, and team-building skills.
  • Certified Smith System Defensive Driving Instructor and/or State/Provincial Instructor Certification in at least one of the States/Provincial in the Region.
