The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Payroll and Benefits Technician to join our team at School District #39 (Vancouver). As a key member of our Technical and Resource Support team, you will be responsible for the timely completion of payroll and benefit deduction processing for assigned employee groups.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform complex calculations for various situations, including new hires, leaves, position changes, and terminations.
  • Recognize potential payroll and benefit problems, investigate, resolve, and report on problems as required.
  • Supervise work performed by staff in lower pay bands, providing training and ensuring accurate and timely completion of tasks.
  • Provide information to employees regarding their payroll and balance records, as well as information to departmental officers and staff members on methods used in computing pay.
  • Monitor and reconcile payroll benefit enrolments and reporting against payroll and billing, initiating corrective action when needed.
  • Prepare workbooks, templates, letters, and forms required for validating and coordinating the schedule in adherence to the payroll calendar deadlines.
  • Process and enroll employees in benefit and pension group plans.
  • Reconcile significant volumes of data, using complex formulas, VLOOKUP, and pivot tables to validate accuracy and completeness of benefit calculations and deductions compared to vendor invoices.
  • Write queries and create ad-hoc reporting and extract data from the database.
  • Provide technical and resource support to the Division.

Requirements:

  • Completion of grade 12 and a valid Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation from The Canadian Payroll Association.
  • Minimum of five years' experience in Payroll and accounting.
  • Working knowledge of federal and provincial laws, Board regulations, and union agreements applicable to wage and salary administration, benefits, and entitlements.
  • Strong knowledge of Payroll legislation, Canada Revenue Agency Benefits, and Pension.
  • Ability to work independently with little direction, exercise high initiative, problem-solve complex issues, and demonstrate strong communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and deadline-driven working environment.
  • Must be able to pass the following assessments: Excel (75+%), Accounting, and Payroll.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain supervisory skills training.
What We Offer

The salary for this position is $40.98/hour (7 hours/day) plus a comprehensive benefits package, including Municipal Pension Plan, Vancouver Employee Savings Plan, Extended Health, Dental, Group Life, Long Term Disability, Vacation, and Gratuity Days.

This position is 100% in-person/in-office at the VSB Education Centre (1580 West Broadway).
