Job Summary

The Overnight Support Worker will provide critical support services to residents living at St. Hilda's Tower, ensuring their safety and well-being after regular business hours. This role requires a high level of emotional intelligence, effective communication skills, and the ability to respond to crisis situations with empathy and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide reception services to staff and residents, ensuring a welcoming and secure environment.
• Monitor activities in common areas and the building perimeter, responding promptly to any issues or concerns.
• Implement crisis response strategies, including de-escalation techniques, support, and debriefing as needed.
• Complete hourly rounds on participant floors, checking on residents' well-being and addressing any concerns.
• Provide after-hours supportive counselling to residents, offering a listening ear and guidance when required.
• Redirect visitors and respond to issues appropriately, maintaining a safe and respectful environment.
• Perform lock-up and alarm duties in accordance with established procedures.
• Respond to the 24-hour resident personal alarm system, providing timely support and assistance.
• Understand and operate the emergency response system, troubleshooting and contacting the 24-hour response team as necessary.
• Carry out appropriate First Aid responses, prioritizing residents' health and safety.
• Work effectively with on-site Personal Support Workers and other team members to address resident and building issues.
• Complete a detailed participant activity log and shift exchange, reporting incidents, occurrences, health and safety risks, and resident community status.

Requirements

• 2-year diploma in social services or certification in security.
• 3+ years of experience working with older adults and/or seniors with mental health, addictions issues, and street involvement.
• Ability to interact effectively with high-risk, marginalized, and vulnerable individuals.
• Demonstrated ability and experience dealing with aggressive behaviours and effective de-escalation and boundary setting skills.
• Demonstrated ability in written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently within established agency policies and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability in conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills.
• Demonstrated use of good judgment.
• Experienced team player.
• Demonstrated competency with using computers, databases, and web-based applications.
• Knowledge of geriatric and aging issues.
• Knowledge of harm reduction approach.
• Knowledge of mental health act.
• Knowledge of community resources and various systems in Toronto.
