Director of Employee & Labour Relations Role Overview
Sinai Health seeks an experienced leader to drive strategic growth in employee and labour relations. As Director, you will provide expert guidance on legal compliance, risk mitigation, and complex labor issues.
About the Position
This is a key role in shaping Sinai Health's future through effective HR strategies aligned with organizational objectives. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in dispute resolution, team leadership, and strategic planning.
Key Responsibilities:
- In partnership with Senior Directors, set strategic priorities for ELR portfolio; develop plans to achieve People Plan and Sinai Health Strategic Plan goals.
- Provide expert interpretation, advice, and counsel to support Senior Management/Executive teams in resolving complex people management issues.
- Liaise with Senior Directors and Executive teams to brief members on significant employee and labour relations developments, legislative challenges, and anticipated issues.
- Investigate and present strategic options and background information on key issues arising through written and in-person briefings to Senior Management/Executive teams; create subsequent system-wide communications and updates.
Operations Management
- Build high-performance teams ensuring optimized performance, development, recruitment, retention, and resource allocation.
- Research, negotiate, and strategize as Chief Spokesperson for Sinai Health during collective bargaining process (ONA, OPSEU, NOWU, CUPE, OPAA); advise management and OHA on negotiated contract changes and assist with strategic implementation.
- Manage sensitive public situations with potential impact on Sinai Health's reputation.
- Take lead in supporting complex staffing redesign.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and approval on all proposals for mediation settlements, grievance responses, and letters of understanding.
- Direct team members in outreach to third-party representatives (e.g., external and opposing counsel, arbitrators, mediators).
Quality & Performance Improvement
- Ensure existing human resources policies, procedures, standards, and practices are consistent with fairness and equity principles, aligned with current legislative requirements.
- Proactively assess and forecast implications of current and potential issues; ensure ongoing research into precedents and case law, trends, and employment-related awards/cases.
- Analyze and strategically utilize key performance indicators to provide metrics and contextual information in discussions with clients and formulation of resolution strategies.
- Conduct in-depth cost analysis to inform strategies and recommendations.
Job Requirements
- Mandatory: Master's degree in related field from accredited institution; 7+ years' experience in hospital ELR management role; or bachelor's degree with equivalent training and experience.
- Preferred: Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL)
Estimated Salary: $120,000 - $150,000 per year, based on location and experience. Compensation package includes comprehensive benefits and opportunities for professional growth.
