Job Overview

This role offers an exciting opportunity to build and maintain strong relationships with indigenous communities, municipalities, and other stakeholders during the development, construction, and operation of our utility-scale wind and solar energy projects in Central and Western Canada. As a Sustainability Specialist, you will work closely with our project teams to implement effective engagement strategies and plans that align with our long-term goals and initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive engagement strategies and plans for our portfolio of projects, ensuring alignment with our long-term strategy and initiatives.
  • Build and maintain trust-based relationships with indigenous communities, municipalities, and other stakeholders, fostering open communication and collaboration.
  • Represent Invenergy at various meetings and public events, effectively communicating our vision, values, and goals to diverse stakeholders.
  • Coordinate community engagement activities across all phases of project development, ensuring timely and transparent information sharing.
  • Assist in securing necessary permits and authorizations, working closely with government agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Negotiate agreements for capacity, traditional knowledge studies, accommodation, and potential partnerships with indigenous communities.
  • Secure site control for development prospects, including negotiating leases, easements, and other agreements with landowners.
  • Manage tasks according to budgets and schedules, coordinating internal and external support as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in undertaking indigenous, community, and stakeholder engagement for large infrastructure or energy projects or related experience.
  • Ability to travel regularly to project sites in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia (approximately 25% of time).
  • Valid driver's license required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with renewable energy projects is considered an asset.
  • Proven track record of building trusted relationships with indigenous communities.
  • Experience undertaking complex negotiations and securing permits and authorizations.
  • Strong organizational, networking, leadership, and time management skills.
  • Exceptional collaboration and facilitation skills.
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and implement strategic engagement plans.

Location

This role is based in Toronto, Canada, with regular travel requirements to project sites in Central and Western Canada.

Estimated Salary

$120,000 - $150,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
