Role Responsibilities

The Government of Alberta is seeking qualified lawyers to serve as full-time or part-time Justices of the Peace. This is an ongoing competition for various locations across the province.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be a Canadian citizen and a member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta, with a minimum of five years of related experience at the Bar. A screening process and recommendation by the Judicial Council and the Alberta Judicial Nominating Committee are required.

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be considered based on criteria such as integrity, professional excellence, community and social awareness, cultural sensitivity, and personal suitability. Appointments are for a ten-year term.

Restrictions on Other Employment

Successful full-time applicants will not be able to practice law. Successful part-time applicants will not be able to practice criminal law or family law, appear as counsel on any matters in the Alberta Court of Justice, represent any client in any proceeding involving the Government of Alberta or the Government of Canada, or represent the Government of Alberta or the Government of Canada in any proceeding.

  • Shift work is a requirement of these positions.
  • Interview and relocation expenses will not be granted.
