Job Summary

The University of British Columbia is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to join our team at the Hearts in Rhythm Organization (HiRO) research office at St. Paul's Hospital. As a Research Assistant, you will be part of a dynamic team focused on conducting national research projects, including data registries and biobanks. Your primary responsibilities will include participant recruitment, data entry, biobanking, and follow-up of study participants with inherited heart conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of Research Ethics Board (REB) applications
  • Review study protocols to ensure logistics are in place for study management
  • Establish standards of practice for protocols to ensure compliance with TCPS2, FDA, Health Canada, GCP, and Institutional Guidelines
  • Work with hospital personnel to arrange logistics for studies
  • Prepare instructions for healthcare professionals on the research process
  • Review healthcare information for potential study participants
  • Interview potential study participants to determine interest and willingness to participate
  • Conduct informed consent processes and document accordingly
  • Coordinate study visits as necessary
  • Conduct participant interviews in person or by phone
  • Complete data collection and case report forms as required
  • Facilitate biospecimen collection and preparation for transportation
  • Attend meetings, training, and workshops as required
  • Compose and type correspondence, develop study documents, forms, and data spreadsheets
  • Prepare data summaries for presentations and publications as needed
  • Ensure data quality and maintenance
  • Aid in protocol and research design development
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require a relevant technical program or university degree in a relevant discipline, along with a minimum of three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. You will also need to demonstrate a commitment to enhancing your awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

A Health Science degree with specialized clinical experience/training in clinical research, particularly in cardiology and/or medical genetics, is highly desirable. Certification in phlebotomy and cardiovascular research experience are also preferred. Strong technical skills, including experience with electronic data capture, medical record databases, and Microsoft Office, are essential. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as good interpersonal and problem-solving skills, are also required.
