Overview:
The Clinical Extern plays a vital role within the healthcare team, serving as an unregulated care provider in both inpatient and outpatient settings at The Royal Mental Health Centre. This position is integral to delivering high-quality care to patients and their families, showcasing a strong commitment to enhancing the patient and family experience. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) and an Extern Mentor/Coordinator, the Clinical Extern hones their skills through education, practical experience, and reflective practice. Responsibilities include assisting with daily living activities and other nursing tasks as delegated by nursing staff.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Responsibilities
  • Operates under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a nurse (RN or RPN) to ensure competency in performing all assigned duties;
  • Engages in patient assessments as directed, including monitoring vital signs and conducting physical evaluations;
  • Assists patients with daily living activities such as feeding, bathing, grooming, and toileting, as well as maintaining a clean and safe environment;
  • Facilitates patient mobility by providing assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, and ambulating;
  • Supports comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring a tidy and hazard-free environment;
  • Contributes to care planning, safety planning, and evaluation processes;
  • Documents care provided and records assessment findings accurately;
  • Participates in additional skills training as approved.
2. Adherence to Policies and Standards
  • Complies with organizational policies and professional standards, considering the guidance from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) for unregulated care providers.
3. Team Collaboration
  • Seeks assistance with assigned tasks when necessary.
  • Promotes and supports effective team dynamics.
  • Operates in accordance with safety practices, policies, and procedures of The Royal Mental Health Centre.
  • Contributes to a workplace environment that aligns with the organization's Harassment-Free Workplace and Occupational Health and Safety policies.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of the second year and currently enrolled in the third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program.
  • Completion of the first year and currently enrolled in the second year of a Practical Nursing diploma (RPN).
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support is required.
  • Maintains excellent academic standing.
  • Experience in psychiatric or mental health nursing (clinical practicums) with individuals facing mental health challenges and/or addictions is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection prevention and control practices is beneficial.
  • Exhibits strong problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Possesses excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with clients from diverse cultural and social backgrounds is essential.
  • English proficiency at level A- is mandatory in oral expression, comprehension, reading, and writing. Bilingualism (French/English) is considered an asset.
