The Project Manager will report to the Senior Manager of Projects, Rolling Stock, and will be part of a vibrant team of project managers dedicated to overseeing various modernization efforts for VIA Rail's rolling stock, including locomotives and passenger cars, across multiple workshops.
This role necessitates a strong presence in the railway workshop, where the selected candidate will need to exhibit exceptional teamwork.
A hands-on approach is crucial, as the candidate will engage directly with workshop teams and support staff.
The ideal candidate will possess a deep passion for mechanics and workshop environments.
Essential skills include project planning and coordination, alongside robust leadership, problem-solving, and strategic decision-making capabilities throughout the project lifecycle.

The Project Manager will oversee a diverse array of fleet modernization projects, with budgets ranging from thousands to tens of millions of dollars.
In this pivotal role, they will lead a multidisciplinary team, coordinating efforts across various sectors, including engineering, production, planning, procurement, logistics, methods, quality, and inventory management.
As the team leader, they will train and guide their team through all project phases, ensuring strict adherence to timelines and budgets.
As an expert in project management, they will develop comprehensive project plans, monitor progress closely, and produce monthly reports to communicate project status to stakeholders and management.
Ultimately responsible for the project, the Project Manager will ensure that all specifications are met, guaranteeing the delivery of a safe and high-quality final product in line with established expectations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage all aspects of project execution, including resource mobilization from various firms;
- Establish and monitor project budgets, timelines, dependencies, risks, and issues;
- Define quality standards and manage the project quality process;
- Ensure effective project governance through documented decisions and steering committees;
- Facilitate monthly Steering Committee meetings and present executive summaries;
- Maintain updated project documentation and provide regular status updates;
- Support the transition of responsibilities to IT Operations and business functions;
- Develop and implement a robust communication and change management plan.
Continuous Improvement:
Actively seek opportunities to optimize processes for timely and budget-conscious delivery.
Qualifications:
- University degree in engineering (preferably industrial or mechanical), administration, or a related field;
- 7 to 10 years of project management experience in rail or heavy equipment sectors;
- Experience in a manufacturing environment is essential, with a minimum of 5 years in a similar sector;
- Proficient in project management tools and methodologies, including Microsoft SharePoint and Project Online;
- PMP certification is an asset;
- Bilingual in English and French is essential.
